AlanPertBigUnlike other British cities, Glasgow draws its influences from cities like Chicago, San Francisco and grand European capitals – the geometric grid and the grand boulevards. Details such as the elevation of buildings and the statues of the city speak of an amazing history – one of recognition of Glasgow's position globally at the turn of the 20th century, an urban force that was at the heart of the Empire. One of the greatest forces shaping the city are its people and the rich social infrastructure put in place during Victorian times. I've got this great nostalgia about the architecture of that period, which goes beyond the grand elements in places like Green Park or the People's Palace – I'm talking about the social infrastructure in daily life, things like the railings, the street lighting, the signage and public toilets.....
