JohnCroallBigI got into joinery as soon as I left school. The wonderful thing about the job is to have the skills to bring old things back to life. We live in a society where nothing gets repaired and everything is disposable – but joinery gives me the opportunity to say 'yes, I can fix that!'. One of the projects I'm most proud of is the conservation of a 19th century listed greenhouse near the Botanic Gardens. My men and I have worked on it a few times over the years, four or five days of craftsmanship are enough to keep it in shape for another good decade. Edinburgh has fine examples of timber and architecture going together. The Queen's Gallery in the Palace of Holyroodhouse features a stunning ceiling and beautiful double staircase...
